ASEAN LOGICS JAKARTA 2007










ASEAN LOGICS 2007 was held in Indonesia, from the 3- 14th August 2007. The University of Indonesia (UI), supported by ASEAN Foundation (AF) held the opening of the event titled “The ASEAN LOGICS”. The LOGICS activities was participated by 44 university students from all over ASEAN Countries.
The representatives of LOGICS also had the great opportunity to meet the President of Republic Indonesia, DR. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The event continued with seminars and workshops in discussing the 4 topics:

1. “Bridging the Differences in Culture & Beliefs” = Ashram Gandhi Puri, Bali
2. “Globalization, Poverty, and Development” = Bina Persada, Gorontalo
3. “Challenges of Epidemic Diseases” =
Perkumpulan Keluarga Berencana Indonesia (PKBI) Papua
4. “Ecosystem and Wildlife Conservation” = ProFauna Indonesia, Malang

Any undergraduate and postgraduate students may propose papers on the following topics:

TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR PARTICIPANTS’ WORKING PAPER

Background
Participants’ working papers are essential in the execution of ASEAN LOGICS 2010. This working paper will serve as information on those four issues on local level ranging from specific communities up to the national level of ASEAN countries. These working papers are expected to describe the conditions related to any of the four issues faced by local communities or nations and the potential solutions to address them.

Goals

1.To comprehend the degree of participants’ knowledge and involvement in one of the four topics.
2.To serve as a starting point for participants in understanding the specific topic comprehensively and where to aim for future local and regional actions.
3.To provide quality materials for working group discussion in the programme.
Format Proposal
The title of a proposal should be concise, descriptive and preferably not exceeding 15 words and focus on the topic of preservation: Traditional Art on the brink of extinction, social development of ethnic minorities, biotechnology & agriculture and the last topic on the sustainable eco-tourism. The participants can choose one of the topics given. The proposal must include short introduction describing its main points, objective, problem statement, significant study on that issues, conceptual framework, methodology approach and conclusion.
The proposal should not exceed 2000 words or 4 printed pages.

All illustrations, including figures, charts and graphs, must be labeled and supplied on pages separate from the text. The desired placement in the text should be clearly indicated. These illustrations should be referred to and numbered serially as figures. The references style adopted should be consistent throughout the proposal. Footnoted information and appendices should only be used if they are absolutely necessary. The footnote should be type written on the bottom margin of the page and appropriately marked in the text.
References in the text should be denoted by giving the name(s) of the author(s) with the year of publication in parenthesis. All alphabetically ordered references list should be included at the end of the proposal. All references cited in the text must appear in the reference list. Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of all information in the reference. References should follow the style of the latest version of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA).
Participants are advised to use Times New Roman 12-point font. Be especially careful when you are inserting special characters, as those inserted in different fonts may be replaced by different characters when converted to PDF files. It is well known that 'μ' will be replaced by other characters when fonts such as 'Symbol' or 'Mincho' are used. We recommend that participants prepare the text as a Microsoft Word file.


All proposal submitted to the ASEAN LOGICS must comply with these instructions.
Any non-compliance will not be entertained.It is the applicants’ responsibility to ensure that his or her submitted work does not infringe any existing copyright. Applicants should obtain permission to reproduce or adapt copyrighted material and provide evidence of approval upon submitting the final version of a proposal.

Site Visit Area







One of the stages of the programme will include site visits that will enable delegates to further interact with one another and to intensify their field-based knowledge. The delegates will then share their findings and experiences.

What is ASEAN Logics?


ASEAN Logics is one of the Programmes proposed during the 2nd ASEAN Student Leaders’ Summit and Cultural Festival held at Angeles University Foundation, Angeles City, Phillipines on January 26, 2007.

ASEAN Students Engaging Action for Local and Regional Contribution to Society (ASEAN Logics) is a forum that is designed to facilitate direct interaction among ASEAN youth and is specifically focused on increasing the regional awareness among Southeast Asians youth. The Programme seeks to provide a platform for participants to share their knowledge and discuss their roles and responsibilities as youth in addressing the issues in the ASEAN region.


How does the ASEAN Logics programme work?


The Programme will rotate around the ASEAN countries and it was held for the first time in Indonesia in 2007. This time around, in collaboration with the ASEAN Foundation and the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia, Malaysia will be the host country for 2010.

How many participants will be accepted?

Only 4 delegates will be chosen to represent their respective ASEAN country. One delegate per topic. Applicants will be chosen based on their working paper.

How old do I have to be to apply for ASEAN Logics 2010?

The programme is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students from the ages of 18- 30 years old only.

When will I find out if I am accepted? Will an interview be conducted?

No interview will be conducted. All applicants will receive either an acceptance or rejection email.

What is the English Qualification?

TOEFL with a minimum score of 550 will be accepted or its equivalent or any other English proficiency test.

Can the paper submission be sent through a joint group work?

The paper submission is an individual proposal paper as only one participant will be chosen for each topic proposed in the ASEAN Logics programme.

Do I have to pay for the cost fare, hotel and accommodation throughout the Programme?

This programme is fully sponsored by the organizer. It will cover costs for all Conference-related activities, including accommodations, meals, local transportation and the site visit area for the duration of 12 days. You do not have to spend anything for this programme, but you are welcome to bring your pocket money to buy souvenirs:)

I am a recent graduate from National University of Singapore (NUS) and will be enrolling for a postgraduate study in the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). I am interested to attend this conference. How do I go about registering myself?

This programme is open to any undergraduate and postgraduate students from the ASEAN region. You have to be a citizen of an ASEAN member country. Pertaining to your status, you may apply on behalf of your country, Singapore.


How do I send my resume, recommendation letter, TOEFL and transcript? Do I send it in the jpg format or the PDF format?


It is much preferable that the documents above be sent through the PDF format. However, it must be noted that the proposal paper must be sent through Microsoft Word, as stated in our Terms of Reference. Please refer to our website for more information. www.iiu.edu.my/aseanlogics

What is the specific format to write the paper? What is the maximum and minimum requirement of pages?

Working paper must be sent in through Microsoft Words and it must not exceed 2000 words or 4 printed pages. Kindly consult terms of reference for participants' working paper and what to prepare for your reference in writing working paper. Working paper not to the standard of our terms of reference will not be accepted

Can I submit a printed hard-copy application?

No, only applications submitted through the official email will be accepted.
